According to Bloomberg, citing sources, Apple has struck a deal with OpenAI to incorporate the ChatGPT chatbot into the iPhone as part of its initiative to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into its devices.
Sources informed the agency that Apple and OpenAI are currently finalizing the terms of the agreement to use ChatGPT features on devices running the iOS 18 mobile operating system. It is noted that Apple is also in negotiations with Google’s parent company, Alphabet, to license its Gemini chatbot. According to sources, negotiations with Alphabet have not yet resulted in any agreement, but they are ongoing.
Bloomberg also reports that in June of this year, Apple will unveil some of the future AI features at the Worldwide Developers Conference, which will be available on devices with iOS 18.
Earlier in May, Apple unveiled a new iPad Pro geared towards AI usage, along with an updated iPad Air. The iPad Pro received its first update since 2018, with the main enhancement being a neural engine claimed by the company to be 60 times faster than its original neural engine from 2017. This will facilitate on-device AI usage.
On March 20, The Wall Street Journal, citing sources, reported that Apple was in talks to integrate AI into its iPhones. It was noted that the enhancements would be focused on device performance rather than cloud technologies.
